Schleswig-Holstein

Schleswig-Holstein – The True North

Described as Germany’s True North, Schleswig-Holstein is Germany’s northernmost state. Whether you want a city break packed with lively culture and culinary experiences or fancy stepping off the beaten track and discovering the sights and sounds that it has to offer, Schleswig-Holstein is just the place for you.

Kiel is the capital city of Schleswig-Holstein and has a long history in shipbuilding and naval traditions. This is still prevalent to this day with its many museums and exhibitions. The Kiel Canal is the world’s busiest man-made water way and connects the city to the North Sea. Enjoy the maritime atmosphere of the city whilst packing in a busy day viewing the art at the City Gallery Kiel, which features contemporary and regional art, before enjoying a spot of shopping.

Mölln is a small town, made famous for its former resident and famous jester Till Eulenspiegel. You will find traces of the character throughout the town and rumour has it that if you visit the Eulenspiegel Fountain in the historical marketplace and quickly rub his bronze thumb and tap the tip of his boot, it will bring you good luck!

If you’re an aspiring chocolatier, put aside four hours of your day and take part in a praline workshop in Mölln and learn the joy of creating and decorating these sweet treats.

Discover the narrow and winding streets of Lübeck with its UNESCO World Heritage Site background and explore hidden courtyards. A ‘must see’ is the Holsten Gate which is one of Lübeck’s most iconic landmarks. This Gothic city gate has decorated many postcards, stamps and 2-Euro coins over the years.

Are you up for a challenge? How about a city tour in Lübeck and throw in the fun of a scavenger hunt? Visit the sights of Puppenbrücke, the Lübeck Cathedral and Love Bridge and pick up clues along the way. The race is on!

Leave the noise of the cities behind and retreat to the beaches and islands of Schleswig-Holstein. Enjoy peace and quiet on a wellness or spa retreat or try your flying skills with a kite or hop on a windsurf. Both sports have grown in popularity over the years with more kite and windsurfing shops opening in the region.

The North Sea Island of Föhr lies in the World Heritage site of the Wadden Sea. It is best-known for its beautiful gardens and thalassotherapy (healing through sea, air and water). With its varied landscapes from sandy beaches to lush greenery, this beach is busy with active and fun events throughout the year and is ideal for a busy family holiday.

The Stockenstiegtrail trail opens to tourists from June to September allowing them to discover the Eidershedt peninsula. Since 1929, this vast marshland has attracted tourists to walk a narrow-tiled path and cross several bridges before arriving at the famous Westerheaver lighthouse. This red and white lighthouse became iconic when it appeared in a Jever beer advert back in the 1970s. Take part in a guided tour and after climbing 157 steps to the top of the lighthouse, you’ll be spoilt with panoramic views of the peninsula.

One of the most popular attractions in Schleswig-Holstein is the Glücksburg Palace. This majestic building sits right on the border with Denmark and is regarded as one of the most significant Renaissance palaces in northern Germany. You can take a guided tour to learn the turbulent history of the building when it served as a residence for the Ducal families of Schleswig-Holstein.

Foodies rejoice as Schleswig-Holstein is renowned for scrumptious tastes and experiences! Sample regional and seasonal “Feinheimisch” which translates as ‘fine and local food’ from local restaurateurs and food producers.

Packed with legends, food and natural landscapes, an escape to Schleswig-Holstein is an adventure waiting to happen!
