Liepāja

Holiday Like a Rock Star in Liepāja!

Perched on Latvia’s Baltic west coast, Liepāja is Latvia’s third largest city and is known for many things. The beach is one, its former military and now busy commercial seaport is another. But perhaps it’s best known as a cultural centre and for its pop-rock music scene. It’s also popular with photographers – picture yourself here to find out why!

Liepāja’s Blue Flag beach has been popular since the 1860s when it first caught the attention of the Russian czar. Today, the beach incorporates facilities that make it accessible to all and the sparkling white sands are sometimes littered with pieces of amber after a storm, so a spot of beachcombing may be in order!

The beach is fringed by the Seaside Park, one of the largest wooded parks in Latvia. Designed to be explored, the park is a joyful blending of natural greenery and architecture. Discover the Ghost Tree, a memorial to legendary rock band Līvi, an Art Nouveau fountain, swan pond and the largest drumkit in Latvia! There’s also the Latvian Musicians’ Alley of Fame and a concert stage – so you might catch a gig if you time it right.

On another musical note, visit holy Trinity Cathedral in September to experience the International Organ Music festival – and the world’s largest unreconstructed mechanical organ. While you’re there, climb the 55-metre church tower to get the best panoramic view of the city.

Liepāja is also known for its naval port, Karosta. Once a major part of the Soviet war machine, this unique site of global significance makes up about a third of the whole city. Today, it’s described as a paradoxical and unique place that’s a haven for creatives and tourists alike. Visitors love to explore the underground labyrinths of the long abandoned Northern Forts – the more adventurous do it by torchlight! Or walk along the Northern breakwater and catch the incredible views out to sea – sunsets here are great for your soul – and the ’gram.

Some people like to come here to spend a night in jail - it’s a hotel experience like no other! This is the only military prison in Europe that welcomes visitors but beware: no inmate has ever escaped, lunch is served in the prison canteen by Soviet-style employees, and discipline is enforced! If you’re not sure about an overnight stay, you can simply explore the cells and exhibition that tells the history of Liepāja until its independence.

Travellers who like their destinations a little more traditional will still of course find lots to do in Liepāja. Street food market stalls will see you through lazy days at the beach and you can look forward to evenings spent in smart restaurants. You’ll find Liepajas menciņš, the city’s signature dish of smoked cod, potatoes and onions, on most menus. We recommend finding a restaurant or a café with a sea view to really enjoy the unique Liepāja experience.

We sail direct into Liepāja from Travemünde in Northern Germany.
