High Coast

A Breathtaking Adventure!

Offering exhilarating views at every curve, Höga Kusten is the High Coast of Sweden. Whether you’re looking for an adrenaline induced expedition or a more leisurely hiking adventure, you’ll find that plus so much more.

Get back to nature when you visit the High Coast and sample some of Sweden’s best outdoor life. With unique environments all around, the selection of activities is limitless. Test yourself on one of the many hiking and cycling trails. If you enjoy climbing, visit Via Ferrata on Skuleberget, or challenge yourself at Ringkallen, which is one of Sweden’s most stunning climbing areas with easy and advanced routes. Ascend Örsjöberget or Örsjöklippan and reward yourself not only with excellent climbing, but also a 360-degree panoramic view from the top.

Adventure through Skuleskogens National Park and explore varied landscapes from forest woodlands to deep valleys and bare cliffs before viewing the world from the top of magnificent mountain peaks.

The High Coast is a hive for heritage and culture and has become a popular spot for inspiration for creative artists. Nordingrå is particularly favoured and artists living in the area either permanently or temporarily open their studios to visitors. If you travel along the tourist route from Hornöberget to Ullånger, you will see the vast selection of art. Pop along to Mannaminne’s permanent exhibition of work by local artists. If you fancy your history to be a bit darker, visit the Witch Museum and learn about this fascinating period. The museum building is also a puppet museum and displays puppets from Raja Theatre’s different performances that were seen by many for two decades.

The High Coast is the steepest part of coastline along the Baltic Sea and its archipelago is quite the sight to behold. What better way to explore it than by boat? Sail to the Ulvön islands, which are the High Coast’s archipelago’s biggest tourist attraction. Once Northern Sweden’s largest fishing community, it’s packed with fantastic cultural heritage. Named as Sweden’s most beautiful village, Trysunda is framed between mountains and hills. Explore the chapel from the 1600s, the fishing museum and stroll along the trails leading to the pretty swimming coves.

One of the most popular museums in the area is the Mannaminne and this was set up by Swedish sculptor Anders Åberg and his wife Barbro. Travel through the museum and see a range of exhibitions from agricultural to trams. Discover the story of the High Coast with a visit to Naturum Hoga Kusten and learn why it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

There’s no shortage of delicious foods to sample in the High Coast with unique flavours and cuisines created with locally sourced produce. If you’re feeling brave, why not try surströmming (fermented herring)? You’ll either love it or hate it!

Visit the High Coast Distillery and enjoy a guided tour and learn about how whiskey is made before retiring to the restaurant and whiskey bar which opens out onto a large decking area overlooking the splendid Ångermanälven river.

For a more sustainable way of exploring the High Coast, hop onboard the World Heritage Bus. A convenient way to travel, the bus runs several times a day between FriluftsByn, the Naturum Visitor Centre at the foot of Skuleberget, Veåsand (Skuleberget Havscamping), and the South and West Entrances of Skuleskogen National Park. You can leave your car in the car park free of charge.

Packed with rustic charm and adventures to suit all speeds, visit the High Coast and enjoy life from a new perspective!
