A Swedish wonderland!
Whether you love the thrill of outdoor adventures or the calming tranquillity of nature, you’ll find what you want when you travel to Värmland!
Spanning across hills, majestic forests, and over 10,000 lakes, Värmland is a natural coastland stretching across central-west Sweden. It’s also home to Sweden’s longest river called Klarälven before flowing into one of Europe’s biggest lakes, Vänern. The varied landscape of Värmland and the miles of water make the province ideal for adrenalin-inducing activities including kayaking, hiking, and skiing.
If you’re a fan of quirky manor houses, then a visit to Dömle Herrgård Spa & Resort, and Hennickehammars Herrgård mansions are a must to get a taste of resplendence in the middle of Värmland’s breath-taking landscape.
If you love being out on the open water then Värmland is just the place for you. Embrace the adventurer in you and try out timber-rafting along the Klarälven river, or go one step further and build your own raft before setting off down the river. Most of the rivers and the lakes are perfect for canoeing, but if you fancy something different then book a fishing tour around the Upplunden lake and you might even catch a pike or perch in the crystal waters. Sit back and enjoy nature at its finest, look out for beaver and moose, and if you’re lucky you might even see the rare white moose that has been spotted in the area.
For snow lovers, there are fantastic snow sports activities to avail of, including cross country skiing trails that are perfect for the novice and the more experienced. Travel over to the northern part of Värmland and you’ll find Sweden’s first ski tunnel, which is a high-tech facility allowing you to ski all year round. There’s a wealth of winter activities available for all ages and abilities, the hardest part will be choosing what to pick, from skiing excursions, snowshoe walking, sledge riding, and ice fishing on the Gräsmången lake.
Not only is Värmland is a hive of outdoor activities, it’s also packed with culture. Mårbacka is the former home of writer Selma Lagerlof and one of Värmland’s main cultural attractions. Pay a visit to this stately home and enjoy a walk through the fruit tree-filled garden. Check in to Varmlands Museum and discover the history of the region for yourself through the various exhibits as well as temporary displays on international artists.
Whilst in the area, dress like a King and stock up on some locally woven linen that is favoured by royalty. Klässbol’s historic weaving mill has an on-site factory shop packed with beautiful treats for your home, the perfect gift to take home with you!
Another reason to explore Värmland is the fantastic cuisine to sink your teeth into. Try classic Swedish dishes such as spinach soup with a poached egg and “raggmunk” – a potato pancake served with fried pork and lingonberries - all recipes are created with seasonal, local produce in imaginative and exciting ways. Foraging is popular in Värmland, so be sure to sample the local delicacies when out exploring!
For a truly authentic and back to nature adventure, a trip to Värmland is an absolute must!
